“In summary, Songs from the Underground is a richly crafted debut that successfully blends diverse genre influences with deeply personal storytelling. Gregg McKella’s distinctive “space-folk” sound, combined with Martin Litmus’s expert production and the heartfelt lyricism throughout, marks this album as a significant contribution to the contemporary folk and psychedelic music scenes....” - JaceMediaMusic

Ultimately, Songs from the Underground” marks a quietly powerful arrival for Gregg McKella as a solo artist, deeply human and rewarding listen, favouring flow, atmosphere, and emotional continuity over immediacy. It stands as a thoughtful artistic statement shaped by time, place, and persistence, offering warmth, melancholy, and quiet hope in equal measure….drawing together decades of songwriting, lived experience, and sonic exploration into a cohesive debut. “A raw, soulful wander through memory, renewal, and the spaces between Gregg McKella steps into his own spotlight with Songs from the Underground, a striking 12-track collection that captures the grit, fragility, and quiet transcendence of a life lived close to the pavement. Known for his work across psych-rock, space-folk, and experimental soundscapes, McKella’s first solo outing distils decades of experience into a record that feels both deeply personal and universally resonant….” - The Paul Martin Review

“Working-class psych-folk-rock’ is one of my thoughts about Gregg’s album….” - Alan Dearling - International Times

Gregg McKella

Gregg is a singer/songwriter originally from Aylesbury and now living in Brighton. He also plays in psyche-space punk band Paradise 9.

Gregg’s new debut solo album, “Songs from the Underground”, is a collection of songs written during his busking years in the 1990s.

The songs vary from folksy driven to psyche blues/neo-folk, which Gregg has dubbed “space-folk”.  The album was recorded and produced by Martin Litmus, who also plays bass, keyboards, synths, mellotron, guitars and drums/percs, with Gregg on vocals, guitars, glissando guitar, clarinet and synths.

Guesting contributors on the album are Nick Pynn on violins, Jeanette Murphy on BVs along with Paradise 9s Tyrone Thomas on lead and slide guitars and Eugene McClouskey on violins.

“Most of the songs on this album were written in the 1990s during my busking years in London. When composing these songs, I had no specific genres in mind but many of the subjects and themes were shaped by my experiences of city life, and hence the light and shade feel of the album.

In 2022, following a PSA blood test I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. I had no symptoms! Luckily the disease was caught in time, and following surgery I made a good recovery. However, this gave me a greater urgency to get the album finished.

At my live shows I now urge all men over the age of 40 to get this PSA blood test, which needs to be requested from their GPs. This simple blood test ultimately saved my life.”
